Getting a replacement
I've had one of these bowls several years and it finally cracked. Everyone thinks it's hilarious and it keeps the dog and cat watered for a couple of days at a time. Today's 2-liter bottles aren't heavy enough to do the job and I long ago switched to a 1.75 liter plastic rum bottle (not as big around but works well). I simply stick my finger in the neck of the bottle as I invert it, remove my finger and quickly slip the bottle in place - I never make a mess. My "mess" has been my Cocker's block head when he tries to retrieve a morsel dropped between his food dish and the water bowl - several times he's ended up knocking over the water/toilet bowl. It can be a lotta water. It wouldn't be a problem if I had more room to space them out, but the last time he did it the "tank" finally cracked - big time. I love it enough to replace it. BTW, I like the slot in the back; I have easy access with an old toothbrush to clean back there.
Cute, but messy.
Looks amazing. It's a hilarious conversation piece. But it's a mess! The water is so close to the top of the "toilet bowl" that my dogs splatter it everywhere (much more so than a regular dog bowl). There is also a hole cut in the back of the "toilet tank" that I assume (?) is there so you can see the water level in your 2 liter bottle. When you turn a 2 liter bottle full of water over into the back, a little water splashes out of that hole most of the time. Personally, I can do without the hole and have taped it up (since it's against the wall anyway). Yes, I tried putting the "toilet" onto the bowl and flipping the combination over, but it made me scared the whole thing would go flying out of my hands and break.
Use a different bottle
The CSB Dog Toilet Bowl is a cute item. You're supposed to use any 2 liter bottle to feed the water supply. The soda bottles I tried all collapsed when inverted. They still worked but it was unsightly. I found a smaller plastic bottle at Walmart called "H2O to Go" - sold empty, made to be a refillable water bottle. They came in several sizes but one was the same diameter as a standard 2 liter soda bottle. This bottle is made of stronger plastic. It still has the problem mentioned by the other reviewer of possible spillage but after a few attempts I think I've overcome this. I am happy with this bowl and would have given it 5 stars had it shipped with a suitable bottle. I've just ordered 2 more via Amazon for Christmas gifts (much lower price than I paid for the first one via Sky Mall).
06/15/12 UPDATE. All three of these have started LEAKING! It appears to be from the area where the water flows from the bottle, not the bowl. Very disappointing.
